Flash: Back Button and Deep Links Topic

March 28th, 2006 by Luis

I know this is an old topic, but I feel like posting about it. Since a few months ago I tried to make flash websites a little bit more usable and functional taking advantage of some new Flash 8 features and going back to old topics such as the browser back button support and deep linking support.

So far we have tried to implement this features in the last two projects we have done for redbull with 95% success, as usual MAC and Safari still very problematic.

Today I found this article in Jens Franke’s blog where he points to a good solution for the Back-Button Support which apparently works in Safari.

A group of us are working on setting up our own framework to do exactly what you seem to have done with your redbull projects. Very cool stuff. Solving the the browser side of the back / forward button detection is one big piece of the problem. However the other aspect is creating a framework within flash that allows for this sort of behaviour. Several ideas have been floated around in our group, but they just don’t seem right (overly complex, not flexible enough).

What really caught my attention on your redbull site is the type of data your stuffing into the hash “page=DriverPage.Coulthard.Career”. Would you be willing to elaborate on the flash framework your using that feeds off of this? Are you following a pattern that other folks have already used and that you can point me too? Any advice you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have read where Google is close to be able to index flash media. I don’t remember the source but it wouldn’t surprise if google finds a way.
