‘Being Henry’ is live!

May 6th, 2011 by Vassilios

www.helloevoque.com/beinghenry

A collaboration between The Brooklyn Brothers, Somesuch & Co and Less Rain, ‘Being Henry’ is an interactive film about choices. Planned from the ground up as an interactive experience, it merges storytelling and interactivity in a seamless and intuitive way.

Less Rain has worked together with director Nick Gordon and Somesuch & Co to prototype all interactivity and have proof of concept before the shoot started. Since then we have been putting ‘Being Henry’ together shot by shot, making sure pre-loading is seamless, fine-tuning all decision points and doing quality control in all deliverables to make sure everyone’s work clicks into place. Watch this space for behind the scenes and more details on interaction design and software development.

Snow Interactive Installation

December 13th, 2010 by Luis

Inspired by the RSA Animate video, we decided to have a R&D day where our team could experiment with different technologies. We loved playing with the Xbox Kinect so, as a personal project, just in time for our Christmas Party our developers created an interactive installation called ‘Snow’.

Snow is an immersive and fun experience where snowclouds follow you around on screen and softly drop snowflakes onto your body.

The project was developed in openFrameworks (c++) using addons such as ofxOpenCV for image processing, ofxBox2d for the clouds behaviour, ofxKinect and the libfreenect driver for body tracking. Many thanks to Microsoft for bringing this technology to market, and thanks to the openframeworks and openkinect communities for their support.

The Land of Me wins a BIMA

November 26th, 2010 by Vassilios

bimas - the land of me

It has been a full year of solid development work, so last night’s BIMA in the Media & Entertainment category couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Media & Entertainment category was a tough one, including massive and very successful games like AKQA’s 221B.sh. Big ups to our friends at Made in Me that created such wonderful content - now you can get the whole lot as a wonderfully packaged DVD-Rom !

Digital Archaeology

walter the fish
If you have been in the industry for less than 5 years, don’t miss Digital Archaeology, hosting a dozen of the most influential sites of the last 15 years and curated by Jim Boulton. Amongst them, the original Antirom website - an paradigm shift for anyone getting into interactive media in the mid-nineties, the groundbreaking early work of Daniel Brown, the original K10K portal and the first online portfolio of less rain, called Walter the Fish.

If you use Safari, you might still be able to view Walter the Fish in the form it existed in 1999, containing all of our experimental / non commercial work between 1998 - 1999. It has been an amazing 12 years since then; respect to Gordon Davies, our tutor in Middlessex University’s Design of Interactive Media MA course - where it all started for some of us.

Here is a list of the Less Rain collective as it was at the time the site was frozen in history:

Lars Eberle - design
Vassilios Alexiou - shockwave programming / sound
Gunnar Bauer - design
Rose Merrill - copy
Sonja Mueller - photography
Simon Sadler - spare brain
Thomas Meyer - programming
Carsten Schneider - design
Craig Hutchins (RIP) - photography
Achim Hagemann - sound
Luis Martinez - programming

Sound & Programming, The Sound of things

October 22nd, 2010 by Luis

Probably the content of this post will be completely different if I remove the “&” character from the title, but my intention is not to talk about sound synthesis or sound production which in some aspects could be something extremely boring.

A few days ago I gave a lecture at Universidad de Castilla La Mancha (Cuenca, Spain) and I started presenting two different ways to understand the essence of programming, a methodical way and a fun way using as example some YouTube videos that explain the “bubble” sort algorithm.

I realise that none of them distill it down to a simple chart of what’s happening plus none of them was representing one of my main interests nowadays, “The Sound of things”. Today I found this video which would probably have been a better option to start the lecture:

I ended up the lecture by showing a more trivial, fun and interesting way of “compiling code”:

Today October 22, 2010 at 8:20 AM I’m obsessed with the idea of how something such as “Facebook” sounds like…
