Painless upgrade to Eclipse 3.1

July 3rd, 2005 by Thomas

I finally gave up the idea of the Eclipse update manager taking care of the upgrade from 3.0.2 to 3.1 as I had previously posted it. It just didn’t do it, although as I understand the settings, it should have…

So I downloaded the new full version. Initially I was worried that it would loose all my settings for plugins etc. but it actually went smoothly!

Here’s what you need to do:

  • If you’re not using a CVS it’s probably a good idea to backup your workspace before upgrading - although nothing happened to my files…
  • Rename your old installation to Program files/Eclipse 3.0 for example
  • Unzip the new one into Program files/Eclipse (that’s where I have it…)
  • Download and install the latest versions of all the plugins you had installed. Most plugins already have a version that’s compatible with Eclipse 3.1 RC’s or work anyways (see below).
  • Launch the new version, when asked browse to your usual workspace folder and select it.
  • Eclipse converts all the settings automatically, even the ones for new versions of plugins.
  • That’s it!

Here’s a list of the plugins I’m using and which seem to be working fine with the 3.1 version:

You were right. The upgrade was painless and I found that the problems I had with CFEclipse 1.2 and Eclipse 3.0 are non-existent with 3.1.

You shouldn’t have tryed using it in the first place, according to the footnote here:
