When light casts no shadow
July 16th, 2009 by TorstenEdgar Martins (portuguese photographer, grown up in Macau, China) creates interesting views on uninteresting scenes. We saw his exhibition in Lisbon, Portugal. Soon his work can be seen in Berlin (November 2009, at Caprice Horn Gallery).
A must-see!

Nice… except for the fact that he fakes his photos! One of his galleries was recenlty recalled by the New York Times, and even in this collection here, it seems that there’s likely some editing going on (e.g., the symmetry in the last photo).

I’m not really deep into photography and I was sure there was some manipulation, but then I read this interview where he denies all kinds of post-production:
“Most people assume that these image are manipulated. Or perhaps even staged. In reality, there is no post-production work, no darkroom or computer manipulation …” (The Morning News, June 2008)
There seems to be a relation between the interview and the series you see above. And all he seems to do is to play with the medium and its technology. But finally I can’t tell you. =)

“A reader … discovered … that one of the pictures was digitally altered, apparently for aesthetic reasons. … Had the editors known that the photographs had been digitally manipulated, they would not have published the picture essay, which has been removed from NYTimes.com.“
What a story …
